Day 444 – Patricia Cullen

Patricia Cullen

Patricia Cullen composed music for the animated series Star Wars: Ewoks and Star Wars: Droids. Cullen is the only woman I am aware of who has composed music for an official Lucasfilm production. (Christy Carew composed the music for the docu-series Looking for Leia).

Cullen also scored the music for several Care Bears movies in the 1980s as well as 46 episodes of the series Care Bears. Sadly Cullen died in 1991 at the young age of 40.

Here’s an episode of Star Wars: Droids that Cullen scored, “The White Witch.”

And the Star Wars: Ewoks episode “Asha.”

  1. I happen to figure out that composer Patricia Cullen used these synthesizers for Droids and Ewoks, both were produced by the Toronto company, Nelvana. Cullen composed many programs for Nelvana in the 1980s before her untimely death.

One of them was an Oberheim OB-X which she had used for an animated 1983 film called Rock and Rule. A good analog synthesizer. The synth has 32 programmable presets.

Another is a Yamaha DX7, a digital FM synthesizer which was new and cool at the time. A couple of patches she used are modified from the various ROM cartridges to accompany the synth.

Another synth Cullen used was a sampler. A cheap $8000 sampler compared to the $20,000 Fairlight CMI. It was the E-MU Emulator II. The sampler has sounds on a large library of floppy disks. Some Ewoks cues has the Shakuhachi sound heard in Peter Gabriel’s Sledgehammer and the Marcato Strings used by Pet Shop Boys.
