Writer, director, producer Sofia Coppola played Saché, one of Queen Amidala’s handmaidens, in The Phantom Menace. She ended up with this role after asking family friend George Lucas if she could spend some time on the set to prepare for her first directorial effort The Virgin Suicides. Lucas suggested she take the role of Saché and the rest is Star Wars history.
It is a bit hard to find Coppola in The Phantom Menace – which was intentional as the handmaidens were masters of going unnoticed. But she can be found in a few sequences.
Sofia Coppola has appeared in a few films as an actress (most notably playing Mary Corleone in The Godfather Part III, but she is now much more known for her writing, producing, and directing work.
The first film Coppola wrote and directed was The Virgin Suicides in 1999. Some of her other films include Lost in Translation (2003), Marie Antoinette (2006), The Bling Ring (2013), and The Beguiled (2017).
